If you've been weighing up Ampd Bros and Cruzr, you're in good company; they're two of the most asked-about brands across our three Sunshine Coast stores. Both build fat-tyre e-bikes with a coastal streak, both have a loyal local following, and both ride very differently once you're actually on them. So which one suits you? Here's our honest, brand-to-brand take.
First, where will you actually ride?
Before you compare specs, it's worth being clear about where the bike's going to live: public roads and shared paths, or private property.
It matters because both Ampd Bros and Cruzr sell their bikes in two flavours. There's a road-legal version; 250W continuous-rated motor, pedal assist that cuts out at 25km/h, certified to the EN 15194 standard. And there's a higher-powered, off-road-only version for private land.
Most comparison guides skip this, but it's the single most important call you'll make. If you're riding on roads and paths, you want the road-legal config of whichever brand you choose. Keep that in mind as you read on.

Ampd Bros: the OG Aussie fat-tyre bike
Ampd Bros or Ampd Brothers, as plenty of you type it into Google, has been going since 2019 and is one of Australia's most established fat-tyre e-bike brands. The ACE platform is the heart of the range and the model we get asked about most.
An Ampd Bros ACE is built around comfort and carrying. You get wide fat tyres, an upright cruiser riding position, Shimano gearing and a frame with real presence on the road.
Step up through the range and the bigger Ampd Bros bikes add dual suspension, larger batteries and enough seat to take a passenger. They feel substantial under you, and for a lot of riders, that's exactly the appeal.
The road-friendly part: the ACE X Pro and ACE S Pro are available in a 250W street-ready configuration that's locked to the legal limit and can't be unlocked. That's the version you want for roads and paths.

Cruzr: compact, playful and easy to live with
Cruzr is a Sunshine Coast local, and their whole vibe is built around fun. What stands out is the breadth of the range, there's a Cruzr to suit just about every rider, whatever you're after.
The GROM is the compact, nimble one, 16-inch wheels, easy to throw around and friendly for smaller riders. The Coast Gen 2 and Traveller Gen 2 lean relaxed and beach-ready. The Barrel and Swell push toward performance, and the Stoke is the big, long-range all-rounder built to carry you and your gear.
Across the board you get Bafang motors, fat tyres and batteries with genuine range. The GROM does around 50km on a charge, with the bigger models going further again.
Here's the part that actually matters for road riding: every Cruzr model comes with a road-legal 250W EN 15194 option. So whichever shape, size or style you land on, there's a compliant version of it, and with the rules tightening from 1 July 2026, that makes staying on the right side of the law genuinely easy.
The 2026 Queensland law changes (worth knowing before you buy)
If you're on the Sunshine Coast, there's one more thing to factor in. Queensland's new e-mobility laws are due to take effect on 1 July 2026, so it's smart to buy with them in mind.
The good news: the actual definition of a legal e-bike isn't changing. It's still 250W continuous, pedal assist to 25km/h, and EN 15194. A compliant bike today will still be compliant after July.
The catch worth understanding: a high-powered bike that's been "speed limited" through software isn't a legal e-bike. The motor's rated output is what counts, not a setting that can be changed in seconds. So whichever brand you land on, make sure it's a genuine 250W EN 15194 model if you plan to ride on roads and paths.
So, which one should you buy?
Choose Ampd Bros if you want comfort first; longer rides, carrying the kids or the shopping, and a substantial fat-tyre cruiser with real road presence.
Choose Cruzr if you want choice; a whole range of shapes and styles, from the compact GROM to the big Stoke, with a road-legal version of every model.
There's no wrong answer here. It genuinely comes down to how and where you ride.
